Safes Cracked in Kinston and Goldsboro, Jan. 20, 1923

Safe Robbed

A safe in the office of Dr. Ira M. Hardy, Caswell Street near Queen, was cracked early Thursday. The safebreaker secured more than $70 in cash and other valuables. No clue was left.

Negro Convict Drives Off Watchman, Seizes Safe and Secured $300

Goldsboro, Jan. 17—“Bob” Williams, escaped negro convict, broke into the office of the Southern Cotton Oil Company here and robbed the safe of $300. Posses are scouring the country around for him.

After opening fire on the night watchman and driving him away, Williams dragged the safe to the yard of the mill and broke it open. Posses struck his trail and one officer was fired upon seven times by the black, who escaped.
