Thief Steals Car to Drive to Chain Gang, Feb. 1, 1923

Rides to Chain Gang in “Borrowed” Car

Here’s a thief that ought to have the prize. He stole an automobile to report for service at the county chain gang to which he had been sentenced for 13 months. Policemen Ponders and Neal, who observed a suspicious looking man driving a car that had all accessories it needed, but a state license tag, stopped the man. The man admitted the car had been “borrowed” by him in order that he might ride in comfort to the county chain gang. Upon his conviction and sentence in superior court appeal was taken to the state supreme court. The lower court was upheld.

Hearing of the decision before the sheriff had been notified officially, the man, out on bond, asked the sheriff for his commitment and started for the roads.

Charge of larceny will be preferred against the man, but if the jurors have a sense of humor, they may let him go when his case come sup for trial at the expiration of 18 months term.
