Man Kills Son-In-Law in Fayetteville—Justifiable Says Coroner’s Jury

Fayetteville Observer, Feb. 28.

For the third time within 10 days, Fayetteville and vicinity has been the setting for a fatal shooting. Following close upon the killing Saturday of W.C. Callahan, special deputy sheriff and railroad police officer, and the fatal shooting a week ago Sunday of John Jackson, colored man, John Widdifield, a resident of Monticello Heights yesterday shot and killed Ed Warrax, his son-in-law. A coroner’s jury this morning returned a verdict that the shooting was justifiable, and Widdifield, who had been in custody since last night, was given his relies and freedom.

Widdifield lived in Lumberton for a short while several years ago, employed as a printer on The Tribune, published here at that time by Mr. C.A. Johnson.
