Fairmont, May 1—Mr. R. Oscar Pittman quietly passed away at his home on Iona street at 3:30 this morning, at the age of 72 years. He had been in declining health since Christmas, although able to be out. The funeral services will be conducted at 10 o’clock tomorrow morning by his pastor, Rev. W.F. Trawick, at the Methodist church, of which he was a consecrated member. The pall-bearers will be members of his Sunday school class. Interment will be in the new cemetery.
R. Oscar Pittman was born in Robeson county. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry F. Pittman. Besides himself, there were another son, Mr. J.H. Pittman of this place, Mrs. J.L. Townsend of Richmond, Va., and Mesdames Florence and Lilly Oliver of Marietta born to his parents who have made for themselves places of usefulness and honor. He was never married.
Deceased was one of Robeson’s best-loved citizens, serving one term as sheriff of the county.
He was a successful farmer and business man and accumulated quite an estate as the results of his industrious and frugal habits.
Few men who have lived in Robeson county in the past have succeeded in impressing their influence for good more indelibly upon the lives of this section than did R. Oscar Pittman.
