A scholarship valued at $1,500 has been awarded to A.C. Jordan, Durham boy, by the general education board of New York City of the Rockefeller foundation entitling him to admission into Columbia University for the coming term. An announcement of the honor was made this week.
In order to secure the scholarship it is necessary for the state superintendent of education to appoint or endorse the man from the state in which he resides for the honor. Only one is allowed a year to a state. Mr. Jordan was recommended by President W.P. Few of Trinity college, and other educators, for the honor and the recommendations sent to Dr. E.C. Brooks, state superintendent of education, and he had the job of selecting the successful man. He appointed the local young man. The scholarship entitles him to one year at Columbia and should he make a suitable mark on his work and desires to do so, can return to the institution for three years or to complete his course of study.
For the past five years Mr. Jordan has taught in local institutions. During the school term just ending he has been instructor in education at Trinity college. He graduated from the Durham high school and from Trinity college and is purely a Durham product.
