Newt Clarke and Charlie Piercy were arrested by Sheriff Sherrill and Deputy Thompson two miles west of here on the Morganton road Sunday evening on a drunkenness charge. Clarke is Piercy’s brother-in-law and was visiting him, and the two, being drunk, got into a scrap. The sheriff was notified and went immediately to make an arrest. Some whiskey was found at Piercy’s house and his wife told the officers that she had broken a pint. Both men were locked up here pending trial yesterday afternoon.
Both men were found guilty on an affray charge when they were tried before Justice of the Peace J.A. Bush, and bound over to court. Piercy, who, it was alleged, had beaten up his wife after she had thrown out broken up his liquor to keep him from getting it, was also bound over on that charge.
