Unveiling of Monument at Court House Square, June 7, 1923

Scenes at Unveiling of Boulder to Colonial Governors

Views of the principals and the boulder in the unveiling ceremony held Thursday, June 7, on the court house square when Richard Dobbs, Spaight Chapter, D.A.R., honored the memory of Governor Abner Nash, Governor Richard Dobbs Spaight and Governor Richard Dobbs Spaight, the Younger. The monument is a huge boulder of Mount Airy granite bearing bronze tablets with the memorial inscriptions.

Principals in the picture are, reading left to right, Gen. frank Nash, direct descendant of Governor Abner Nash, who read a paper on the latter; Dr. D.H. Hills of Raleigh, who brought greetings from the State Historical Society; Rev. J.A. Vache, Presbyterian minister; Arabella Parker Cox, direct descendant of Governor Nash, who with Mrs. Nelson (seated at the right of the border), performed the unveiling; Judge Henry A. Grady of Clinton, who read a paper on the Spaights; seated, Mrs. Margaret Donnell Nelson, direct descendant of Governor Richard Dobbs Spaight, the Younger; standing behind Mrs. Nelson, Mrs. Elizabeth Congdon, member of Richard Dobbs Spaight Chapter; continuing to the right, Mrs. Owen H. Guion, regent of Richard Dobbs Spaight Chapter; Mrs. C.W. Tillett of Charlotte, state regint of the D.A.R.; Mrs. John Dunn and Mrs. George T. Willis of Richard Dobbs Spaight Chapter; Mrs. C.M. Parks of Tarboro, chairman of the Fifth District societies; Mrs. C.S. Hollister, Miss Anna Hanff and Mrs. Sophie Duffie of Richard Dobbs Spaight Chapter.
