The winners in the Carthage Home Improvement contest will be announced at a Community meeting at the Co-Op warehouse Friday, July 27th, at 8 p.m. The speakers for this occasion are Mrs. W.N. Hutt, Southern Pines, on “Why we need to make our homes more attractive,” Mr. O.J. Howard of the Howard-Hickory Nursery, Hickory, N.C., on “The selecting, planting and caring of shrubs,” Mr. C.O. Keuster of Charlotte on “What is required of the citizens to make a town grow,” and others to be announced later.
The judges will use pictures taken when (the) contest was opened in October and score the yards as they are now, ones receiving the highest points winning.
This is the score card to be used:
Lawns, 25 points
Walks, 15 points
Shrubs, 15 points
Trees, 15 points
Yard Flowers, 15 points
Porch Flowers, 15 points
Total, 100 points
This contest was opened in October 1922 by the Civic Department of the Woman’s Club with the help of the Home Demonstration Agent--the merchants and bank offering the prizes which were displayed in N. Hurwitz Store windows when the contest opened and are now on display there. These consist of 12 pieces of porch furniture for the white people, three cash prizes for the church, and three pieces of porch furniture for the colored people entering the contest.
Those who entered contest come and see if you are a winner. Those who did not enter come and hear why you should have.
