200-Gallon Still, 1,000 Gallons of Beer Captured, Aug. 14, 1923

Large Still Captured. . . 1,000 Gallons of Beer Destroyed

Constable Ernest N. Bragg, Deputies Conrad Walters and Ernest Hunt are entitled to a trophy. On Friday evening last they captured the mammoth still that has been bothering the good people of Northern Granville for more than a year.

The still has a capacity of 200 gallons, and before it fell into the hands of the officers last Friday it was owned by two men in Virginia, and when the officers in the Old Dominion got after them they fled to North Granville. They have been see-sawing across the State line for more than a year, said Officer Bragg.

The officers learned last Friday that the still was somewhere in Walnut Grove township. They went direct to that part of the county known as the “Meadow.” They saw the smoke issuing from the top of the tall trees and approached with great caution, but the moonshiners saw them first and left the still, which was in full blast and took the liquor with them.

The officers destroyed about 1,000 gallons of beer, dismantled the still and brought it to Oxford about 6 o’clock Friday evening. It was one of the largest stills ever captured in Granville, and it was the object of much curiosity here.
