Thrilling Auto Races at Rocky Mount, Aug. 10, 1923

Thrilling Auto Races to be Held in Rocky Mount. . . “Red” Daily, J.H. Harper and “Barney” Holderby, Well Known Local Drivers, Will Pilot Cars on Rocky Mount Track, August 10th

An announcement was made yesterday by “Red” Daily, well known racing pilot, that the Eastern North Carolina Racing Association had secured the Rocky Mount Track on August 10th to stage a number of thrilling auto races.

The event is expected to be the biggest of its kind the association has staged this season, with a number of drivers and cars from all parts of the state, the competition to be keen. The local drivers are all overhauling their cars in preparation for the coming race and are in hopes of “bringing home the bacon.” Five races are on the racing card, those being:

Five mile race for heavy cars.

Five mile race for light cars.

Championship race, to be raced between the first three winners in the light and heavy car races.

Time trial race, for all cars to establish a time on the Rocky Mount race.

Ten mile, free for all.

Three well known drivers are entered in the classic, and their many friends are awaiting eagerly for a chance to see them race. In case of rain, the races will be held on August 13th.

“Red” Daily, who won recognition on the Norfolk track about a month ago, will again pilot his “Cadillac Cyclone.” J.H. Harper, another well known pilot, will drive either a Chevrolet Special of Lightning, with which he has won a number of events on various tracks. “Barney” Holderby will be found behind the wheel of his well known car “Spark Plug.”

There are several other entries from Raleigh, Greenville and Farmville.

It is also understood that “Wild Yank” Aycock, who has piloted T.N.T. to a number of victories, is making another car for the coming race, the make of the car is unknown, it seems as though Yank’s car will be the “dark horse” of the race.
