Charles E. Johnson Has Died, Sept. 10, 1923

Charles E. Johnson of Raleigh Died Suddenly Sunday Morning. . . Was President of Carolina Power and Light Company; Widow Survives. . . Confederate Veteran. . . Was at One Time Largest Cotton Exporter in South—the Funeral Will Be Held Monday

Raleigh, N.C., Sept. 9—Colonel Charles E. Johnson, 50, president of the Carolina Power and Light company and its subsidiaries, died suddenly here early today, following an attack of angina pectoris. He is survived by his widow and one son, Charles E. Jr.

For many years Colonel Johnson has been a leading figure in the business life of Raleigh. Borne here, at the age of 13 years he enlisted in the Confederate army and served during the defense of Raleigh in the closing days of the war. His father, Doctor Charles E. Johnson, was surgeon general of the confederate forces in North Carolina.

Colonel Johnson was a descendant of James Iredell, member of the first United States supreme court, of Governor James Iredell of North Carolina, and of Governor Gabriel Johnson, first governor of North Carolina. On his maternal side, he was a direct descendant of John Alden and Priscilla Mullins.

At one time during his business career in Raleigh, Colonel Johnson was engaged in cotton exporting, and was said to have been one of the largest cotton exporters in the south.

Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow afternoon at Christ Episcopal church here.
