Oswell Kinion Proctor, 64 years of age, died Saturday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock at his home two miles from the city on the Holloway road. Death was caused by a complication of diseases.
Mr. Proctor was born on April 13, 1859, in that part of Durham county that was once Orange county, and he resided here during his entire life. He was one of the best known men of the county. For 40 years he was a steward of |Carr memorial church and was always active in all affairs pertaining to his church. He was also a member of the East Durham lodge of Pythians in which he was active. Always having a love for children, he was one of the leading spirits in an effort several years ago to establish a home for orphaned children in the eastern part of the county. The place was called Joyland and the foundation of the building was erected. The building was never completed however. Mr. Proctor gave the land for it and also contributed a large sum of money. He was a member of the board of county commissioners for two terms and was a pioneer in Durham county’s road program. He was a director in the Peoples bank of East Durham. Six years ago Mr. Proctor was forced to give up active work and since that time his health had declined. He was engaged in the real estate business and farming.
Surviving him are his widow, two brothers, W.W.H. Proctor of Varine and J.S.H. Proctor of East Durham; also many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted from the home Monday afternoon at 3 o’clock, Rev. J.H. Buffaloe of Carr Methodist church and pastor of the deceased, officiating. Burial will take place in the family burying grounds.
Pallbearers will be from the board of stewards of his church and others, as follows: Y.E. Smith, H.H. Mullen, Joe Ashley, J.B. Simpson, A.P. Carlton, Troy Boone, Ed Ragan and E.T. Rollins.
Floral bearers will be nephews of the deceased, as follows: B.G. Proctor, S.L. Proctor, W.L. Proctor, F.E. Southerland, Norman Spikes, Everette Spikes, Howard Hodnett, H.E. Linthicum, Ewell Watts, all of Durham; J.H. Proctor of Lillington; D.C. Proctor of Parkton, and C.K. Proctor of Kinston.
