Too Much Tobacco at a Time May Depress Prices, Warn Experts, Sept. 15, 1923

Too Much Tobacco Marketed

Kinston, September 15—Conservative tobacconists here today warned planters to “ease up” in their marketing operations. With deliveries here recently running as high as 500,00 pounds a day, prices may sag if the rush continues, it is feared. Growers in the local territory are putting the product on the market at the rate of 10 million pounds a month. Even with a bumper crop, gradual selling to carry the season past the holidays would be preferrable to forcing the market, tobacconists say.
