Washington—Maternal mortality was greater in the United States during 1921 than in 19 of the important foreign nations, it was shown in statistics made public by the children’s bureau of the department of labor.

The death rate in the United States in 1921 from child birth was 6.8 for every 1,000 live births, only Belgium and Chile, among the nations reporting, having a higher rate, the former with 7.2 and the later 7.5.

Denmark, with a rate of only 2 per 1,000, showed the lowest maternal mortality.
