Birmingham Axe Murderer Strikes Again, Nov. 5, 1923

Redouble Efforts for Axe Murderer. . . Two Other Victims Added to Long List of Persons Who Have Been Mysteriously Attacked in Birmingham

By the Associated Press

Birmingham, Ala., Nov. 5—Birmingham police redoubled their efforts today in an effort to solve the city’s latest axe assault committed last night in a downtown alley when Jane Jackson, a young negro woman, and W.T. Conway, 30, were other victims. The woman died a few hours after the attack. Conway’s life hangs in the balance with the doctors giving little hope for recovery.

The death of the woman brought the number of murders to 7, while 15 deaths have been recorded as a result of axe assaults upon people of small shops and members of their families since the beginning of the “axe wave.” In addition to the death of 18 persons attacked, five have recovered from injuries inflicted. The assailant of the Jackson woman and Conway used an axe or a hatchet, the police assert, the victims being hacked by heavy blows. Investigations have resulted in a number of arrests, but few convictions.
