Asheville, N.C., Nov. 17—Fire swept the top of Battery Park hill, where the famous Battery Park hotel is being razed, in the heart of the city, this afternoon about 5:30 o’clock, destroying two wings of the building that still remained, piles of lumber and material from the wrecked building and sent a shower of sparks flying over the city.
Firemen were still at work at midnight on the blaze although the remaining wings had been entirely destroyed. Valuable building material from other parts of the structure were stored in these wings.
Police officials have investigated a report that a boy was buried under a falling chimney and removed all brick and debris in the vicinity, but no trace of him was found. The estimated loss is between $30,000 and $40,000. Fire insurance on building material is carried to the extent of $14,000, officials of the company wrecking the structure announced.
