This Year's Corn-Pulling Is Going Well, Nov. 7, 1923

Corn-Pulling Time—Maybe Larger Than Last Year

The corn crop right around the Wilkesboros seems to be better this than last year if the crop on the old brick yard bottoms between the two Wilkesboros can be considered an index to this small region or even the whole Yadkin up and down through the county. It has been cultivated by Mr. James Smithey of Wilkesboro or near Wilkesboro—at the Charley Carlton place—said last week, last year the bottom land half or more of the divided (of recent years) tract made 300 bushels.

Most of this year’s crop had been gathered last Friday and is being shucked. The pile is full of pumpkins and the largest one was “gently lifted” by some one the other night.

It was exceedingly large and brings to mind the large one some person from across the Ridge brought to the Wilkes fair several years ago weighing over a hundred pounds it is said.
