Durham Brothers Marry the Stroud Sisters in Pittsboro, Dec. 19, 1923

Brothers Marry Sisters Tuesday

It is not every day that brothers take sisters for their respective wives, especially colored folk. Tuesday was one of those exceptional days. Five dusky residents of Pittsboro walked into the office of the Register of Deeds Markham, and four of them were given licenses. An older companion saw the two brothers and two sisters made two in one ceremony, performed by A.J. Barbee, clerk of the marriage license bureau who is also a justice of the peace.

The couples married in one ceremony in the register’s office were:

William Durham, 38, and Annie Stroud, 24, both of Pittsboro.

Henry Durham, 28, and Mattie Stroud, 23, both of Pittsboro.
