The power situation in Murphy and vicinity is beginning to elicit the serious consideration of the progressive citizenship of this community, if quiet conversation on the streets and in the business houses during the last few days is an indication of what the people are thinking.
“A number of prominent business men are inquiring into the power situation,” reports the city electrician, “and while they have not advanced any definite plan for meeting this situation, they agree that something must be done or the progress of the town will be held back.”
No constructive undertaking inculcated to add basic wealth to the community can be carried on without power and electrical power has come to be one of the most economical form of energy, especially in communities far removed from the coal and oil fields. As has been generally known for some time, town has sold up the full amount of the power generated at the municipal power plant and still there are demands for power that should be met from some source.
“Several operations already at work are asking for more power so that they may increase their output, and new concerns are making inquiry about securing power,” according to the Mayor.
This is a serious situation and one that the community should turn its attention to until it can be solved. The longer delayed, the longer will be the growth and development of industries in this section be held back and the longer will the welfare of the community be hindered.
