William Montgomery Leads Salisbury Police on Merry Chase, Feb. 5, 1924

Tries to End His Life When Near Capture. . . William Montgomery, Negro, Leads Two Salisbury Policemen a Merry Chase

Salisbury, Feb. 4—William Montgomery, a negro driving a large Packard car bearing a New York tag, gave Chief of Police Calllimore and Motorcycle Cop Smith the chase of their lives this morning, and when he saw he was about to be taken threw himself in front of a passing car, evidently with suicide intent.

The negro drove off from a filling station north of the Yadkin river without paying for gas and when Salisbury officers were advised by telephone and attempted to flag the car, the driver stepped on the gas and when through the business section of the city at a rapid rate. Officers Gallimore and Smith mounted a motorcycle and the race was on.

Several miles north of Concord, the negro had his way blocked by an unfinished railroad underpass and deserted his car. Before the officers could overtake him as he ran, he threw himself in front of a Studebaker driven by T.H. Collins of Charlotte, and received injuries that apparently rendered him unconscious. He was brought back to Salisbury and his car is being held. While it bore a New York tag, there was a North Carolina tag No. 46144 in the car, and it developed this afternoon that the car was stolen at Durham last night.
