Charlotte, N.C., March 1—True bills of indictment against five Charlotte cotton brokers and representatives of brokerage houses were returned by Mecklenburg county grand jury this week, it was announced by Judge A.M. Stack today. The indictments were based upon presentments submitted by Solicitor Carpenter at the January term of court upon instruction of Judge Stack, and charge that each defendant “did unlawfully make contracts” to sell and deliver cotton when it was not intended that the cotton was to be actually delivered. Further, the indictments charge operation of “bucket shops.”
Those named in the indictments are Floyd Simmons of F.M. Simmons and Company; Theodore Parris of Hicks and Williams; W.V. Birdsong, manager for W. Collier Estes; Thomas Riley, manager for Vick and Beauchamp; and Alex Haughton, representative of Moss and Ferguson.
