The Athletic activities have been very successful in the A.H.S. this year. Football has just begun to get a start in A.H.S., and in spite of its being a new game to the boys, we won a large percent of the games. These victories were due to the interest and hard work the boys put into the game, and we hope by next year this sport will be of interest to all the people of the town as well as to the student body.
Now basketball, as you all know, is another great game, not for boys alone but for girls as well. A.H.S. had three basketball teams this year. They were the Midget, girls’ teams and then that real team that worked like a piece of machinery on the floor, and a team that was a credit to any high school. The varsity won the county championship, and would have stood a good chance in the state championship, if it had gone in for it. The Midget played some excellent ball, and the prospect of A.H.S. is good for a better team in the near future.
Basketball for the girls was new to them but they played some well fought games. One of the most interesting games of the season was the one between the girls’ team of Mitchell Home and A.H.S. girls. They played a tie and had to play two minutes extra with the result of a victory of A.H.S. girls won by just one point.
Spring has come again and you can see the boys get that old glove and ball and begin to catch ball, and the next thing you know they are on the baseball field with a smile on their faces so large that the smile is all you can see. A.H.S. has played some real ball this season and has lost only two out of 10 games. The last game was at Wadesboro when our fast squad defeated W.H.S. nine, 5 to 4.
Tennis is a new game at A.H.S. but great interest is being shown among the student body. The court has been wired in and various other improvements are being made to make tennis an interesting game for the boys and girls of A.H.S.
The high school wishes to express its appreciation to every one that has assisted in making athletics so successful during the entire term.
