Sue E. Whitaker, 81, Died April 21, 1924

Mrs. Sue E. Whitaker

Mrs. Sue E. Whitaker, relict of the late J. Simmons Whitaker, passed away at her home near Enfield on Monday evening, April 21st, being in the 81st year of her age.

She was the daughter of Joe and Caroline Waldo, and was born May 1843 in Hamilton, Martin County, N.C. On January 22, 1867, she was married to J. Simmons Whitaker of Enfield, who preceded her to the grave a number of years ago. Eight children were born to this union, two of whom have passed away, J. Simmons Whitaker dying in childhood and Eloise Whitaker while a student at the N.C. College for Women in Greensboro. The following children survive: Messrs. Cary and J. Waldo Whitaker, and Misses Mary, Elizabeth, Susie and Lulie Whitaker.

On Tuesday afternoon, surrounded by a large concourse of sorrowing friends and relatives, Mrs. Whitaker was laid to rest by the side of her husband in the family plot at Whitaker’s Chapel, her pastor, Rev. D.R. Willliams, conducting the services. The floral offerings were unusually beautiful and profuse, and under a canopy of beauty and fragrance she was left sleeping.

She was a devoted mother, and was the recipient of untiring attention and devotion of her sons and daughters. She was a good neighbor, and her kindness and generosity were unstinted and unfailing. She was known for her thoughtfulness and consideration for others, and for many years her home was a center from which was dispersed genuine and lavish Southern hospitality.
