Guy and William Karriker Rescue Cows From Flood, June 13, 1924

Statesville Youngsters Rescue Cows from Flood

Mooresville, June 12—Guy and William Karriker, young sons of Mrs. J.C. Karriker, who live at the old Milson mill place on Kerr Creek in Rowan county, showed wonderful grit and skill Monday afternoon just after the heavy rainfall in that section. Mrs. Karriker’s pasture extends to the banks of the creek and is fenced in. A number of cattle were browsing there when the rain came on, and the boys secured some ropes and started for the cows. They could not find them, but were standing on the small bridge watching the rising, swirling waters. They were startled to see the heads of the cows popping out above the water in midstream coming toward them. They hastily arranged their ropes and succeeded in effectively lassoing every cow and hauled them to safety on the home side of the creek. The boys are said to be very young and did not realize their own peril when standing on a small bridge when the water was only a few inches below them.
