Cora Moore and Second Woman Escape County Jail, July 8, 1924

Jail Break Here Late Yesterday. . . Cora Moore and Another Negro Woman Escaped from County Jail; Locked Janitor Up and Took His Keys

Yesterday afternoon at 4:30, while Ben Joyner, janitor of the Wilson County Jail, was making his rounds preparatory for leaving for the night, he was attacked by Cora Moore, a negress prisoner, and another negro woman, also a prisoner, being knocked down and his keys taken from him.

They then proceeded to lock him up and make good their escape. Chief Dorsey was notified and going to the jail broke the lock to let Ben out. A thorough search of the jail premises failed to reveal either of the two women and Chief Dorsey immediately sent out officers to apprehend the prisoners. But up to noon today they were still at large.

Three weeks ago the same Cora Moore stole Ben Joyner’s pistol and it is believed she pawned it planning to have money when time was ripe for escape, which occurred yesterday.
