The body of Mr. Charles Whit Gaskins, formerly of New Bern but who has for the past few years made his home at Asheville, and who died in that city Friday, will pass through the city this morning en route to New Bern for interment.
Mr. Gaskins was prominent in Masonic circles in Eastern Carolina before leaving for the western part of the state to make his home, and had a number of friends in this city and immediate section.
The New Bern New Bernian yesterday morning carried the following account of his demise:
“A telegram received here early last night brought news of the death yesterday in Asheville of Mr. Charles Whit Gaskins, formerly of this city. The remains are to be brought to New Bern, to reach here tomorrow morning, and the funeral services will be conducted at 5 o’clock tomorrow afternoon from Centenary Methodist church.
“Arrangements for reception of the body of Mr. Gaskins Sunday were underway shortly after the receipt of the telegram last night, and it was announced by Mr. C.D. Bradham, Recorder of Sudan Temple, of which the deceased was a member, that the remains would be taken to Shrine Home Sunday morning to lie in state here until the hour of the funeral.
“It was stated also that Rev. H.A. Humble, formerly pastor of Centenary Methodist church, of which Mr. Gaskins was a member during his residence here, would in all probability come to New Bern to assist in the conduct of the funeral services. He was a close friend of the deceased and only recently visited him at Asheville, it was stated.
“Mr. Haskins, a native of this city, had been living in Asheville for the past year and a half, having gone to the Western Carolina city seeking improved health. His condition during that time grew steadily worse, however, and recently became critical.
“Surviving Mr. Gaskins are his wife, Mrs. Lenore Anderson Gaskins, two sons, Charles W. Jr. and Robert Gaskins, and two daughters, Lucile and Dorothy Gaskins.
Prominent in Masonry
“Mr. Gaskins, who was nearing is 60th year, was particularly prominent here in Masonic work. he was a great family man and home-lover, and in Centenary church with Mrs. Gaskins, was an ardent worker. He was past master of the St. Johns Lodge, No. 3, conspicuous in the Scottish Rite, he was a Shriner, and a member of the Eastern Star, once being an officer in Craven chapter.
“Full Masonic honors will attend the funeral services Sunday, and it is expected that a large crowd of Masons will be present.”
