20,000 See Klansmen Parade Through Winston-Salem

It is estimated that from 15,000 to 20,000 people from Winston-Salem and the surrounding counties witnessed the big parade and ceremonial staged by the members of the Ku Klux Klan last night at Hanes Park. This even proved to be the biggest drawing card of the holiday.

The parade formed in the vicinity of the post office and the Klansmen marched down Liberty street to West Fourth street and out West Fourth to Hanes Park. All along the way the streets were lined with people who had gathered to witness the march of the hooded figures.

There were a number of novel and interesting features of the parade, one of which was “the little red school house,” which was drawn along on a truck. the fiery cross, a huge lighted affair, was also in the procession. a number of streaming banners bearing such words as “We Put God First,” “the Bible in the School Keeps the Boy Out of Jail,” and “Clean House, Politicians,” were sprinkled throughout the procession.

Membership was revealed as 600; 75 new members were initiated last night. –Winston-Salem Journal
