J.P. Kramer, 57, Died Sunday, Nov. 9, 1924

J.P. Kramer Funeral Today. . . Death Came Early Sunday Morning to One of the Community’s Oldest and Best Citizens

Joseph Perry Kramer, 57 years old, died suddenly at his home, 207 East Main street, Sunday morning at 12:30.

A heart attack which resulted in Mr. Kramer’s death lasted hardly more than 10 minutes. He had retired but had not gone to sleep when he complained of difficulty breathing, and a few minutes later suffered his last heart attack. Dr. Ike Fearing was summoned, but his patient was unconscious when he arrived and died within a few minutes, suffering intensely for about five minutes.

A strange coincident in the fact that both his brothers, John and Allen Kramer, died in their 57th year. Knowing that he was subject to heart trouble, Mr, Kramer naturally dreaded his 57th birthday.

Mr. Kramer was active in the civic and religious interests of the city, holding membership in the Kiwanis Club and always showing personal interest in the work of the Chamber of Commerce. Not many hours before his death Mr. Kramer invited Evangelist Ham to hold services in the lobby of the Kramer Building.

J.P. Kramer was the son of the late D.R. Kramer, who moved to Elizabeth City from Watsontown, Pennsylvania when Joseph was a boy four years old. J.P. Kramer became identified with Kramer Brothers Company in early manhood, and was secretary of the firm at the time of its liquidation in 1917. Mr. Kramer was director of the present Kramers Brothers Company in early manhood, and was secretary of the firm at the time of its liquidation in 1917. Mr. Kramer was director in the present Kramer Brothers Company, director of the Savings Bank & Trust Company, vice president of the H.C. Bright Company and for many years President of the Albemarle Building & Trust Association. He had been a registered architect since 1915 and drew the plans for many of the city’s most important structures. He was superintendent of construction for the First Methodist Church, the largest house of worship in this city.

Educated in the city schools Mr. Kramer began working in the Kramer Brothers Company while he was still a boy, and at the age of 17 taught school for one term. At the time of his death Mr. Kramer was a trustee of the First Methodist Church and had held important offices in the church and Sunday school during his long life of service. His first work was in the Sunday school where for 25 years he served as librarian.

Mr. Kramer was married in November, 1901, to Miss Frances Eudora Willis, who survives him. He is also survived by one daughter, Miss Elizabeth Kramer; four sons, Robert, Willis, Joseph and Albert Kramer; four sisters, Mrs. A.T. Davis, Mrs. Annie Banks, Mrs. P.H. Wiliams, all of this city, and Mrs. C.W. Edwards of Durham.

Funeral services will be conducted at the First Methodist Church at 3:30 o’clock Monday afternoon, with his pastor, Dr. N.M.D. Wilson conducting the services. Dr. Wilson will be assisted by Rev. G.F Hill, rector of Christ Church, Rev. Daniel Lane, pastor of City Road Methodist Church, and Presiding Elder C.B. Culbreth.
