General Hines Says Woman Can Play Role in Service, Feb. 23, 1925

General Hines Discusses Work of Women During the Late World War. . . Services Very Valuable. . . Chief of Staff Tells Them They Can Do Many Things That Men Cannot Do and Save the Men for Heavier and More Dangerous Work

Washington, Feb. 23—The war department’s intention to study woman power, three possible solutions of the national defense and some of the problems faced by the regular army were discussed by Major General Louis D. Hines, chief of staff before the Woman’s Auxiliary at George Washington’s birthday meeting today. Things that women can do in war are being studied by the general staff, not with the idea of making fighters of our girls or making a woman battalion of death, he said. But experience has proved there are some tasks that women have performed better than men and we propose to catalog these to ascertain how they can be used in order to release men for heavier and more dangerous duties.

Referring to the national defense problems, General Hines said there are several solutions. The first is to wait until war comes and then pay the full price. The second is to prepare hurriedly at a great cost and waste when war is imminent, and the third is to build according to a program year by hear and which is the only economical way.
