Rescuers Find Body of Floyd Collins in Cave, Feb. 17, 1924

Rescuers Reach Sand Cave Man This Afternoon

Floyd Collins was found dead this afternoon by those who had been endeavoring to reach him. Collins was found after the rescuers had penetrated in what they believed was the original Sand Cave cavern which he entered on Jan. 23. No official examination was made as it was impossible to reach the victim. H.T. Carmichael was the first man to go to Collins. He said that apparently, he was dead. Guards stood about the mouth of the shaft and there was little commotion on the surface. Homer Collins, the brother of the entombed man, was at the mouth of the shaft where he has been most of the day. Preparations were made to send two physicians into the shaft to make an examination on how soon Collins could be extricated from the natural rock-vise which proved to be his tomb. It was reported that the roof of the cavern gave way over Collins causing them to reach him several hours before it was excavated. When the miners crashed through into the passage leading to him Carmichael went to the cave where he saw Collins lying apparently dead. He returned to announce the end of the struggle.
