Before a well-filled auditorium Sunday morning, Rev. H.C. Miller concluded a series of two discourses based upon the 17th verse of the 9th Psalm: “the wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.” Two propositions were discussed: 1. Is the lost soul to be conscious? 2. Is the term death real or figurative of sleep?
For 35 minutes the speaker held the rapt attention of his audience in which was a large number of summer school teachers. Many are the comments on the searhing questions asked by the speaker.
Mrs. Cherry, of the A. & T. summer school faculty, sang the offertory to the delight of her hearers.
The Sunday school was largely attended, there being more than a hundred present, notwithstanding the many absentees from the city during June and July. The banner for finance went to Earnest Workers’ class; for attendance to Up and Doing class.
Mrs. Georgia Caldwell is ill at this writing. She has gone to the country for a two months’ rest. Her many friends hope for her an early recovery.
The Missionary Society met with Mrs. Claudia Freeman last Thursday. Quite a number of ladies was present and perfected plans for the closing meeting of the summer.
An open forum was conducted Sunday night in which many of the members and friends participated. The topic was “Obligation,” based on the historical incident of Dirk Willenzoon and the sheriff who arrested him after being taken from the river by his prisoner.
Mrs. M.C. Phifer is spending the summer in Roanoke, Va. We certainly miss Mrs. Phifer from the church and Sunday School. She is a member of the choir and teacher of one of the largest classes in the Sunday school.
Prof. J.A. Grimes is a faithful member and contributor to the work at St. James. Notwithstanding his heavy duties as English professor at the A. & T. College, he seldom misses a service.
Miss Carrie McNeill, who is returning from State Normal summer school at Durham, is spending a week in Greensboro as guest of Mrs. Marie Florence, 309 N. Beach St. After leaving Greensboro Miss McNeil will visit friends in Newark, N.J.
Miss Evelyn Allen of Holbook St. Presbyterian church, Danville, Va., is attending summer school at A. and T. College. Miss Allen has been one of our summer school guests at St. James several times during her stay here.
Mr. and Mrs. P.H. Doswell, Dr. Gary and little John Garry made a flying trip to Greensboro yesterday. Mr. Doswell is an elder of Holbrook St. Presbyterian church. His niece, Mrs. Julia Holly, and many friends welcomed him to our city.
The Christian Endeavor Society gave a lawn fete at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. McBriar, E. Market Street extension, on Tuesday evening. A number of the members and friends went out to enjoy the party. This beautiful home elevated on a hill makes an ideal place for a lawn fete.
