14-Year-Old and Studebaker Disappear; "Kidnapper's" Note Left Behind, Aug. 7, 1925

Boy Disappears with His Father’s Sedan. . . Note Is Left, Evidently Intending to Leave Impression That He Had Been Kidnapped

Winston-Salem, Aug. 7—the 14-year-old son of U.C. Grubbs, who lives a few miles west of the city on the Country Club road, and Mr. Grubb’s Studebaker sedan disappeared from the home last night about 10 o’clock and a note was found, following an investigation, which evidently is intended to give the impression that his disappearance was the work of kidnappers.

The note read as follows: “Send $500 to St. Louise, postoffice and will return your boy.”

Bob McMillan, another youth, who lived in the community west of the city, is also missing and he is thought to be with the Grubbs youth.

The police have been notified of the incident and are now investigating the case.

Notices to nearby cities have been sent out requesting the holding of the two boys if they are seen, it being thought that they wrote the note themselves to make their parents and friends think that they had been kidnapped.
