Drought Increased Loss Due to Forest Fires, Sept. 18, 1925

Much Timberland Burned. . . Total of 23 Conflagrations with Property Loss of Approximately $72,828 During August

Asheville—All records for forest fires during the month of August were broken in western North Carolina last month when 23 fires with a property loss of $72,828 were recorded, according to the partial monthly report of Thomas Alexander, forest warden for the western district. During August, 4,923 acres of timberland were burned over.

During the two months of July and August there were 24 fires with property loss of 73,428 and which burned over 5,053 acres, showing that most of the fires occurred during August which with the first two weeks of September seems to have been the peak of the unusual dry season harassing the western section of the state.

The report of the warden does not include Harrison, Henderson and Transylvania from which complete reports have not been received for August, or does it include those counties not co-operating with the state department in forest fire prevention. There were also a large number of fires still burning when the partial report was completed and which will run into the September report.

Reports reaching the forest office indicated that heavy showers during the past few days have extinguished all fires which have been burning for the past three weeks.
