Eloise Brown Becomes Charlotte's First Female Policewoman, Sept. 16, 1925

Charlotte Appoints a New Policewoman. . . Duties Will be to Protect Girls from Mashers and Handle Women Prisoners

Charlotte, Sept. 15—Charlotte city commissioners moved to make the pastime of “mashing” unpopular by appointing a woman, Mrs. Eloise Brown, a member of the police department today. Mrs. Brown’s principal work, according to the announcement, will be in trying to make the streets safe for young women, who have been insulted with increasing frequency during the past few weeks by imposing men.

Mrs. Brown also will handle practically all women prisoners coming into the hands of the department. She is Charlotte’s first policewoman.

It was noted here this afternoon that Greensboro appointed Charlotte girl, Miss Louise Alexander, as its first policewoman more than two years ago.
