Steals Sack of Flour and Is Shot in the Chest

Charlotte, Oct. 16—Shot while stealing a sack of flour, according to his own confession, John Smith, negro, was lying at the Good Samaritan Hospital Thursday with a bullet wound in his chest. Smith, employed at the Interstate Milling Company, on the day force was found on the sidewalk in front of the company’s building Wednesday night and was brought to the police station by L.E. Moser and Ed Pittman, plainsclothesman.

Smith was questioned by chief C.R. Ferguson and admitted he had stole a 24-pound sack of flour. He said an employe of the company shot him, but he could not identify him. The officers returned to the mill and questioned employes, but no one could shed any light on the shooting.

C.P. Moody, president of the Interstate Company, said Thursday morning that he had no information as to the shooting. He said the company employed no watchmen.

Smith worked at the mill Wednesday. He was reported as resting comfortably Thursday at the hospital.
