Supervisor of Convict Camp Charged with Tying Prisoner to Truck and Dragging Him to Death, Oct. 12, 1925

Charge Stanly Supervisor Caused Convict’s Death

Rockingham, Oct. 8—Charges that Cranford, supervisor of the Stanly county convict camp, tied a prisoner to an automobile truck and dragged him to death are made in a report by the State Board of Charities and Public Welfare which has been received by Judge P.A. McElroy and Solicitor Don Phillips here, they stated today.

“All kinds of cruelty and irregularities are charged in the report,” Solicitor Phillips said. He stated that he will institute an investigation on the report “looking to the indictment of Cranford as soon as possible.” He stated, however, that he would be unable to do anything until November 23 when the next criminal term of the Stanly County Superior Court convenes.
