Dr. Britt, Buford Robertson Held for Death of Ruby Helms, Struck by Their Car, Nov. 6, 1925

Two Arrested for Killing a Woman. . . Dr. C.S. Britt and Buford Robertson Held for Death of Ruby Helms in Auto Accident

Charlotte, Nov. 6—Dr. C.S. Britt, an official connected with the local office of the veterans’ bureau, and Buford Robertson, local young white man, were arrested here late this afternoon by Charlotte police officers on a charge of manslaughter in connection with the death last night of Miss Ruby Helms, young white woman of this city, who was almost instantly killed with struck by an automobile.

Miss Helms was fatally injured and her escort, A.L. Jackson, young white man, was seriously injured shortly before midnight in Lockwood, a suburb, as they were walking along to street to Miss Helms’ home on Sylvania avenue after attending a picture show.

After striking the girl and man, the automobile, a large machine, was stopped and the occupants got out and stopped a passing automobile, insisting that the occupants of the passing machine carry the victims to the hospital. The passengers of the death car were insisting that they were in a great hurry to reach Salisbury. W.C. Collins and his wife and H.M. Zeigler were in the second car and brought the injured couple to the hospital, the girl dying en route. However, Zeigler secured the license tag number of the other machine and, using this as a clue, officers late today arrested Dr. Britt and young Robertson.

Police officers tonight said that the number was that issued to W.P. Lee. Lee’s car was taken over by the officers this afternoon. Lee has not been arrested, and it was reported here tonight that he is in the Keeley Institute at Greensboro. Officers refuse to indicate whether or not they will ask for his arrest.

Dr. Britt tonight made bond in the sum of $5,000 and secured his release. The bond was signed by a number of local physicians. Robertson, it was said, probably would be able to arrange bond before morning. His bond was fixed at $5,000 also.

Officers say that they believe that Dr. Britt and Robertson left here last night to carry Lee to a hospital in Greensboro and that they were en route to that city when they struck Miss Helms and Jackson. The doctor and Robertson, according to the police, deny the charge against them.

The young couple were walking out beyond the Seaboard underpass towards Sylvania avenue after attending an uptown picture show. The machine that killed Miss Helms swerved to the side of the road and struck her before she could dodge, according to Jackson who also was hit and dragged for 20 feet. He sustained severe injuries about the body but is expected to live. Miss Helms died within a few minutes after being taken to the hospital by a passing machine. Miss Helms was 21 years of age. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Helms of Sylvania avenue.
