Freight Train Whistle Wakes Duvall Family in Time to Escape Burning House, Nov. 18, 1925

Family in Burning Residence Warned by Train Whistle

Asheville, Nov. 17—The warning signal of a locomotive going down the railway on the banks of the French Broad River probably saved the lives of W. Duvall, his wife and seven children early this morning when their house at Craggy, a few miles from Asheville, caught fire while they were asleep.

The home of Mr. Duvall, who is the proprietor of the Violet Dairy, is located not far from the tracks of the Southern railway. As the heavy freight train going down the river between Asheville and Knoxville arrived in the vicinity of Craggy at 2:55 o’clock Tuesday morning, the engineer saw the house burning and blew the distress signal on the engine whistle, which awakened Mr. Duvall in time for all occupants of the house to escape in their night clothes.
