Judge Webb Pleads Nolo Contentre to Speeding, Nov. 4, 1925

Judge Webb and the Law

Charlotte Observer says: Some days ago Judge E.Y. Webb of the Federal court bench was arrested in Guilford county for speeding. The incident showed that in this state the officers of the law, like the law itself, are no respecter of persons. But Judge Webb was cited to appear before a magistrate in Guilford for trial and did not show up at the expected time. Some newspaper notoriety grew out of the incident of the failure of the judge to report, and there were intimations of disrespect for the magistrate. But it turns out that Judge Webb had been in hospital and was deprived of his mail, so that he knew nothing of the row that was being raised. Through Judge Cook and the clerk of Federal Court at Greensboro, Judge Webb entered plea of nolo contendere, at the same time giving explanation and declaration which satisfied the court, the people and the State. Judge Webb is one man in whom inconsistency does not lodge.
