Tom Forbes Leaves Wife, Children Stranded in Florida, Nov. 13, 1925

Deserts Wife and Children. . . Elizabeth City Man Leaves Family Stranded in Florida

Deserted by her husband and left penniless with three small children, Mrs. Tom Forbes, an Elizabeth City woman, is writing to her friends back in Elizabeth City to send her help. Florida’s got no use for folks who haven’t got money.

When the Forbes’ left here last summer in a small boat they had upwards of $7,000 which had been left to Mrs. Forbes by her father, the late John Bailey, of Hunter Street, who died about two years ago. It is said that Forbes had made away with all his wife’s money and to add to her shame has just put out news among the Floridians that Mrs. Forbes is not his wife at all. Forbes left them on the boat on which they journeyed from Elizabeth City; a boat purchased with Mrs. Forbes inheritance money. It is said he attempted to set fire to the boat before leaving is wife and children.

Mrs. Forbes and her children are desperate according to friends in this city who have heard from her. Florida is running over with cases like hers, of women deserted by damphool husbands who went to Florida to get rich and how went broke instead. Florida gives such paupers cold comfort.

In the meantime some in Elizabeth City who could help her have a sneaking fear that they would have to continue to provide for her and the children if they brought her back home. This is a great world if one can stand up to it.

From the front page of The Independent, Elizabeth City, N.C., Friday, Nov. 13, 1925. "Damphool" is the way you could spell "damned fool" in the paper in 1925
