Bumper Crop of Rattle Snakes at Rocky River, Dec. 16, 1925

Fourth Rattler Killed at Rocky River Today. . . Bumper Crop of Snakes Gives Rise to Number of Speculations as to Origin

The mystery of a sudden bumper crop of rattlesnakes in the Rocky River section of the county continues to grow. Another snake was captured this morning and brought to the city.

According to people who saw the reptile, it was as large as the other six-footers which have recently made their appearance in local circles and was the possessor of 13 rattles. None of the details of its capture could be learned, although it was dead when it was brought to Concord.

This makes the fourth snake discovered in that section of Cabarrus within the last two weeks, two of other others two having been found alive and one dead by farmers in the vicinity.

Speculation is rife in the city over the question of whether or not the snakes really grew here or whether they were here as the result of some outside agency. The people are divided into two camps on the question.

The one camp maintains that the reptiles could not possibly have grown to the size which they have attained in its thickly settled country as that at Rocky River. Various reasons are assigned as to the cause of their appearance in that section.

One of the favorite stories is that they escaped from a circus car passing there and made their abode in Cabarrus from force of circumstances. Another is the one about the bootleggers who wish to keep officers from that part of the county. Still another is a tale to the effect that the snakes were driven from the mountains on account of the fire there this summer. The insinuation is that they were charmed by Cabarrus county as a place for residence.

The other camp insists that there would be ample opportunity for rattlers to grow to a hoary old age in the wilds near the river.
