Judge Webb Calls Wealthy Violators of Dry Law Breeders of Anarchy, Oct. 5, 1926

Webb Denounces High-Up Tipplers. . . Wealthy Violators of Dry Law Called Breeders of Anarchy by Judge

Charlotte, Oct. 4—“The curse of America is its rich men, the breeders of anarchy who in order to satisfy their appetites, violate the prohibition laws and, at the same time, decry the idea of giving the same privileges to the masses,” Judge E. Yates Webb of Shelby declared here Monday, in his charge to the Federal Grand Jury at the opening of the October term of court for the Western North Carolina District.

“The majority of the people can do antying under the American system of government,” he asserted. “This majority saw fit to enact an amendment fo the constitution, known as the prohibition law. But the upper class continues to drink whiskey because they feel that they are above the law. ‘It is awful, they say, for the workers to drink but we are the privileged class.’

“These men are breeders of anarchy and Americans hope is that the stuff tey insist on drinking will rot their insides out and their race will vanish from the face of the earth,” Judge Webb declared, as he pounded the judicial desk with his fist.

“Prohibition is working wonders wit this country of ours,” Judge Webb declared. “The progress of the nation as a world power is marvelous, Lloyd George, the great English statesman, declared recently that this country is the greatest in the world, not because it ha more money, but because it has no barrooms.”
