Spanish Flu Mild in Hickory, Closing Public Places Not Necessary, Oct. 5, 1918

“Spanish Flu Mild in Hickory Section,” from The Monroe Journal, Hickory, N.C., Saturday, Oct. 5, 1918. Spanish flu is mild in Hickory, and they aren't closing schools or cancelling fairs, but if you come into town from an area with the flu, you will be arrested.

There probably are 100 cases of Spanish influenza in Hickory and suburbs, but only two cases are serious. Mr. Charlie Hines, who lives on Chestnut avenue, is seriously ill, as also is a child of Mr. U.M. Hahn.

Hickory people have noted the efforts of other towns to prevent the spread of disease. Raleigh and Charlotte have quarantined, closing schools, churches and public places, but Greensboro has failed to do this. Physicians say that to close a few places and leave others open would do little good. If every place was closed up good and tight, including stores and manufacturing plants, the disease still would prevail, but it would run its course sooner and there would be fewer cases.

The best thing the people can do is to ask the advice of physicians. By all means, colds should be broken up promptly and the stomach kept in good condition.
