Ella Adams Sent Back to Husband After Attempt to Flee Husband's Bad Treatment, Nov. 3, 1919

Police Interrupt Elopement Plans

Raleigh, Nov. 3—Crying for their “mama” as if their hearts would break, three small children did not shed tears in vain last night because three policemen stopped the planned elopement of their mother, Mrs. Ella Adams, and Fred Miller, after the couple had purchased tickets for Henderson. They were arrested at the end of the shed of the Union station while awaiting for the northbound Seaboard train.

When the couple arrived at the police station they were greeted by an infuriated husband, A.V. Adams, and Miller lost no time in seeking safety behind the bars once the cell door opened after him. Mrs. Adams was not place in jail, but allowed to go home with her husband to their children, whom she would have deserted.

Bad treatment by her husband whom she did not wish to live with is the wife’s reason for leaving home to elope with Miller. She gave no excuse for deserting the children and did not mention them to the police, but kissed her oldest boy when he met her at the station after the police had arrested the couple.

Mrs. Adams and Miller will be in city court this morning and Judge Harris is expected to settle the family troubles.

Big Mayor’s Court Today

There was a big mayor’s court today and on account of one of our machines being down it was impossible to get that up and much other local matter.

There were several cases up for bringing liquor into the city. Policemen secured a number of gallons of liquor from both depots as some negroes believed to be distributors for stills over eastern North Carolina alighted form the trains.

There were a number of speed maniacs up for exceeding the limit in the face of the number of accidents recently.

There were also a number of gamblers and drunks. Liquor seems to be very plentiful and unless the amount of liquor is reduced in this county or the number of automobiles, or those who run cars are licensed, the number of accidents will be constantly on the increase.
