Halloween at Dawsons
The Halloween party given Friday night by Misses Craig and
Joyce, our popular teachers here, was enjoyed by a large crowd of people and
many ghosts and goblins at Stallings store now used as a school room for 4, 5,
and 6 o’clock. The room was decorated with bunting in festoon style, also an
abundance of autumn foliage and many pumpkin Jack o’ Lanterns. Then there were
black cats and witches galore. In the first corners were booths where the
pupils sold apples, oranges, candies, gum and sandwiches.
Slide shows were quite an attractive feature to the night
when for “only a time” you could see the “crying babies” with pacifiers, cap
and dresses to resemble an ideal little one which proved to be the stoutest
pupils in school, following was “six suits for five,” also the swimming match.
Next was the bobbing apples in a pan of water which attracted
our attention and many tried in vain to bite the hanging apples and merriment
ran high among the young people. Of course the fortune teller was to be found
in her booth, which was really one of the girls who had studied fascinating
humbug, if humbug it be, to seem quite wise indeed, and her earnestness sent
all away fully convinced that what is to be will be.
The proceeds amounted to $36, which will be used for basket
ball for the school. The best of all, we had the jolliest sort of a good time.
Misses Craig and Joyce came from Rockingham county and have
been here only two months, and Dawson’s people in fact the whole school
district, consider ourselves fortunate in securing their services.
