7-Year-Old Maudie Batton Fatally Burned, Dec. 29, 1919

From the Rockingham Post-Dispatch, Thursday afternoon, January 1, 1920

Child Fatally Burned

Maudie, the 7-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hamp Batton, who lives on the Wm. Ledbetter place on Route 5, was fatally burned Monday afternoon. The child was in the yard where her mother and sister were at work during the family wash, and must have gotten too close to the pot. At any rate, her clothes ignited and the flame quickly enveloped her. Despite the desperate efforts of her sister to extinguish the flames, she was so badly burned that death resulted Wednesday morning at 2 o’clock.

The funeral was held at Green Lake this (Thursday) afternoon. The parents have the deep sympathy of friends in the untimely death of their daughter.
