Clays Elect New Officers

The Henry Clay Literary Society met in regular session Friday evening, January 16^th. Society was called to order by President Barrett.

Due to the fact that the building was insufficiently heated, the literary program was postponed one week.

As this was the time for the election of new officers, the following were elected. They will be installed at the next regular meeting. President N.A. Fox; vice president J.T. Zachary; secretary J.S. Taylor; assistant secretary, L. Kiser; censor W.T. Cox; sergeant-at-arms T.C. Woody; chaplain A.T. Newlin.

The society was pleased to have as visitors for the evening Messrs. F.S. Blair and Busick, the former of whom made a few explanatory remarks concerning the coming Peace Oratorical Contest and renewed the invitation to the Clays to participate. Mr. Busick expressed his appreciation of the visit and commended the general conduct of the society.

Early organized clubs at Guilford College included Henry Clay (“The Clays”), the Websterian (“The Webs”), the Philomathean (“The Phils”) and Zatasian (“the Zays”).
