The Phils Install Officers, Enjoy Program on The Land of the South, Jan. 21, 1920

From The Guilfordian, Guilford College, Jan. 21, 1920

Officers Installed by Philomatheans

The Philomatheans held their second regular meeting of the new year last Friday evening, January 16th. The house was called to order by President Moore, who appointed Miss White as critic for the evening. The following officers were installed:

President—Miss Anna Henley

Secretary—Miss Myrtle Cox

Marshall—Miss Ruth Reynolds

Miss Elsie Clegg’s division then rendered the following program:

Theme—“The Land of the South”

Reading—“Land of the South,” Miss Elsie Clegg

Song—“My Old Kentucky Home,” Misses Yates and Clara Henley

Paper—“Old Plantation Days,” Miss Bulla

“Southern Poems,” Miss Helen Robinson

Reading—“The One-Legged Goose,” Miss Rabey

Solo—“Carry Me Back to Old Virginia,” Miss Clara Henley

Reading—“Mr. Rabbit, He’s a Good Fisherman,” from Uncle Remus, Miss Yates

This program was given in a very effective manner and especially was it interesting to all Southerners.

After an encouraging and beneficial critic’s report, society adjourned.

Early organized clubs at Guilford College included Henry Clay (“The Clays”), the Websterian (“The Webs”), the Philomathean (“The Phils”) and Zatasian (“the Zays”).
