Dies From Gun Wounds
John Daniels, a colored youth who was shot on Roanoke Island
on the night of Sunday, December 28, 1919, while on his way home from church
with his sweetheart, died last week from blood poisoning following the
amputation of his right leg, which was partially severed by the explosion. The
boy who shot with a large gauge shot gun at close range and one George Baum,
another colored boy, is charged with the crime. Jealousy is assigned as the
motive as the girl is said to have spurned the advances of Baum in preference
to those of Daniels, Baum is now in the Dare county jail, held for the next
term of superior court.
