Statesville, May 7—The commencement exercises at the Iredell County Farm Life School marked the closing of the 13th year of effective work of this institution in the elevation of the standard rural life in this community. The school is located at Harmony, one of the best and most progressive sections of the county. Domestic science and agriculture are taught here, as well as a thorough literary course, giving the students well-rounded educational advantages, emphasizing those things which men and women need in practical daily life, both in business and in the home.
The literary address was delivered by Dr. Shewmake, professor of English in Davidson college. Dr. Shewmake’s subject was “The Friendship of Books,” and in his scholarly address he emphasized the importance and value of good literature. Good books are for the entertainment, instruction, inspiration and encouragement of those who read them. In the selection of a book, something that will wear, something of abiding value, should be sought, not the light and frivolous.
There are 24 graduates this year, the largest class in the history of the school. The graduating exercises revealed something of the good work accomplished in the various departments, but the board of trustees report that they are handicapped for lack of room and additional equipment, to meet the needs of the institution. Among the improvements contemplated for the summer are a new building, to be known as the Farmer’s Cottage which will be erected at the expense jointly of the people of the community, the county and the state; a modern water system, withy bath and toilets, in both the Boys’ and Girls’ dormitories, at estimated cost of $2,500 was decided on by the trustees.
